Winter and stuff

Image
Just when I thought it was almost over (45 and sunny) it snowed another few inches.. Came down wet at first so It stuck to everything. Made for some cool pictures the next day. It's upper twenties right now and sunny... I made two versions of this next one, with differing degrees of photoshop. It's hard for me to tell which one looks best because my monitor is brighter and has more contrast than average. So, which one is better? 1. Light editing (contrast mainly) 2. The works, looks like overkill to me...

I did 25 laps yesterday for a total of 10,375' of hiking up hill. Roughly equivalent to climbing 16,600 stairs. The winner this year was another John. I led for the first 3 laps and then decided I didn't want to suffer that badly all day and slowed down a little bit. I ended up taking second in mens to another John, and third overall as the winning women did 26. She was the 4 time national mountaineering champ, so I certainly don't feel bad about losing to her. I carried my GPS, here's what it looked like:

So it's still cold here, but I went on a bike ride anyways.. About 32 degrees, and sunny for the first 15 minutes. The trail went along a river in Danielson, CT and there was a lot of cool old mills and dams and stuff like that. There was also Some really big gravel pits, I mean really big. Piles of dirt hundreds of feet tall. I didn't bring my camera, but I took this one with my phone because it was so cool looking. The gears for the spillway for the dam I went over. And this is the path I took next to the state of Rhode Island. total distance for my ride was around 12 miles give or take. The trails were frozen loose dirt, so it was probably good that it was so cold, I bet they are considerably less fun to ride in the summer..

It snowed again at Bridger Bowl. First time in a while, and it just so happened that I had modified my schedule so that I didn't have to come in at all on Thursday if I didn't want to. I didn't want to this Thursday. The really cold weather (-45 wind chill!) made having a beard an experiment in growing icicles. They connected to my chin at one point. Did some ridge-hikes with Ian and some other friends. It was ankle to waist deep snow, kind of what I remember Bridger being like a few years ago when the snow fall was consistent. This season has had the smallest amount of snowfall I've ever seen at Bridger (7 years). Stupid el nino. It's good now though, going to go skiing in the Bridgers tomorrow, not at the ski area since my pass is midweek only. Maybe getting towed on a snowmobile somewhere.
